Sublimation is the most accessible method to start a customization business. You do not need a large space, industrial machinery, or tens of thousands of lei invested at the start. With a printer, a press, and a few consumables, you can print a mug or a T-shirt directly from home, and the cost per product comes to just a few lei.
In this guide we focus on the technical side: what equipment you need to get started, how to choose between a mug press, a flat press, or a combo press, which consumables to buy, and, most importantly, how to print correctly on each type of substrate. All examples are designed for a realistic starter budget, between 2,000 and 4,000 lei.
The printer produces an image on special paper. Under pressure and heat (around 180 - 200 °C), the ink turns from solid directly into gas and penetrates the polyester layer of the product. Result: the image becomes part of the material, not a layer applied on top. That is why it does not peel, crack, or fade in the wash.

1. What you can and cannot print with sublimation
Before equipment, you need to understand a fundamental rule, because all the products you will buy depend on it: sublimation works only on surfaces that contain polyester or that have a special polymer coating layer.
In practice, the ink bonds to the polyester. If the product does not have polyester or coating, the image will not stay. That is why there are special mugs for sublimation (with white coating) and sublimation-ready T-shirts (made of polyester or with a high percentage of polyester), unlike regular mugs and T-shirts.

Many people buy ordinary 100% cotton T-shirts because they are cheaper, then wonder why the image does not stay on. For sublimation, you need a material made for sublimation: sublimation compatible modal (recommended, with a natural, soft feel) or polyester. Regular cotton does not work; there are other technologies for it (DTF, transfer film), but those are a different topic.
2. The equipment you need
A sublimation workshop needs four things: a printer, sublimation ink and paper, and a heat press. We'll take them one by one.
Printer
To start, the most popular solution is an Epson ink-tank printer (EcoTank), which you fill with sublimation ink instead of regular ink. The recommended model is Epson EcoTank L1250 (A4): it is affordable, has easy-to-fill tanks, and an A4 format that covers mugs and T-shirt designs. The printer is the only item you buy separately; you can find the rest of the consumables with us.
The printer comes with regular ink in the box. Do not pour that ink into the tanks. It is not compatible with sublimation and will not work. Fill the new printer directly with sublimation ink (for example Hongsam), not with the ink from the package.
Sublimation ink and paper
Sublimation ink is different from regular ink: only it turns into gas when heated. Sublimation paper has a coating that holds the ink and releases it evenly under pressure. On regular paper, the result comes out faded.

This is the most important budget decision. You have three options, depending on what you want to print:
- Mug press — if you want to start only with mugs. The cheapest entry into sublimation.
- Flat press — for T-shirts, plates, mousepads. Does not do mugs.
- 5-in-1 combo press — does mugs, flat surfaces, caps, and plates too. The best choice if you want to cover multiple products with a single machine.

For a workshop just starting out, the recommendation is to stick with standard products, with high demand and easy to press. The classic white mug and the white sublimation-compatible T-shirt are the safest starting points.

Traditionally, sublimation on textiles is done on polyester. However, there is a better option for a workshop just starting out: sublimation T-shirts made from modal. Modal is a fiber of natural origin, obtained from beech cellulose, softer and more pleasant on the skin than polyester. These T-shirts are specially produced for sublimation, so you get the comfort of a natural material and full compatibility with sublimation at the same time. For someone starting a business, modal is the perfect option: it looks premium, feels like cotton, and prints flawlessly.
Soft hand feel, premium appearance, very good price-quality ratio, and consistent stock. The customer receives a T-shirt that feels like cotton, but on which the image fixes just as well as on polyester.

5. How to print a mug, step by step
Create the design (you can use Canva for free) at the mug's print size, usually around 20 x 8 cm. Leave a small margin so the image does not end exactly at the handle.
Print the design on sublimation paper, on the matte side, with the Mirror option activated. If you print text without mirror, it will come out reversed.
Wrap the paper around it (with the printed side toward the mug) and secure it tightly with heat-resistant tape. The tape must be well stretched, without folds, otherwise blurry areas will appear.
Place the mug in the heated mug press and wait the indicated time (see the parameter table). The press makes the transfer through heat and pressure.
Take out the mug, remove the paper immediately, and let it cool. Attention, it is hot. After cooling, the mug is ready to deliver.
6. How to print a T-shirt, step by step
The design is printed on sublimation paper at the desired size on the chest. Just like with mugs, activate Mirror if you have text.
Give the blank T-shirt a short press to remove moisture and smooth the material. This way, the transfer comes out clean.
Place the paper with the printed side on the T-shirt, centered, and secure it with heat-resistant tape so it does not slip during pressing.
You press at the parameters in the table. At the end, lift the paper immediately, with a quick motion, to avoid ghosting.
7. Correct pressing parameters
Temperature, time, and pressure are the three variables that determine whether the product turns out well. The values below are an indicative starting point. I always do a test on a product before a large order.

8. Common beginner mistakes
You use regular cotton instead of sublimation compatible material
On 100% cotton, the image does not bond and comes off after the first wash.
✅ Fix: use T-shirts made for sublimation, modal (recommended), or polyester.
You forget to print in mirror
The text comes out reversed on the product and you wasted the mug or T-shirt.
✅ Fix: turn on the Mirror option when printing whenever you have text.
Wet paper or material
Moisture causes washed-out colors and uneven spots.
✅ Fix: keep the paper in a dry place and pre-press the T-shirt for a few seconds.
Low-resolution image
Photos taken from the internet come out pixelated and unclear on the product.
✅ Fix: use images of at least 300 DPI at the print size.
Wrong time or temperature
Too little: pale colors. Too much: burnt colors with a yellow tint.
